30 Years of Rough Sleeping in Brighton & Hove
First Base Day Centre opened in 1984 and so will be 30 years old in 2014. This is why we decided to use this time frame to research the history of homelessness in Brighton and Hove.
We commissioned Lenna Santamaria, a social researcher, to collate the report using data and information from a range of services and sources. The aim of this research was to provide a picture of homelessness in Brighton and Hove over the past 30 years.
The report examines the number of people rough sleeping and presenting as homeless in Brighton & Hove, as well as looking at the policy context and its effects: how housing and homelessness policy has changed over time and the resulting effects on homelessness especially street homelessness. It starts by looking at the number of rough sleepers and how they are counted.
Please also look at our oral history project exploring 30 Years of Homelessness in Brighton and Hove which explores the personal stories of clients who have experienced homelessness in the past 30 years and also the experiences of professionals who have worked in the homeless sector.
